Spirits and Wine Dinner BY GRAIG SMITH, Vice Chargé de Presse ON THE BALMY evening of June 18, Cincinnati Bailliage members assembled at the Transept Event Center for a much- anticipated spirits and wine dinner. Event organizer Vice Echanson Mary Horn brought in Master Distiller Jordan Via of Savage & Cooke Distillers to lead an educational spirits tasting, which was followed by a superb wine dinner. Winemaker Dave Phinney of Orin Swift fame owns Savage & Cooke, and his spir- its have the distinction of being aged in Orin Swift wine barrels. Attendees tasted a five-year-old Kentucky whiskey, a four- year-old bourbon, and two tequilas. They experienced how the barrels imparted a satisfying boldness to the spirits, making them extremely enjoyable alone or in a blackberry cocktail. Michael Forgus is the owner of Funky's Catering Events. The Funky's team, led by Director of Culinary Operations Larry Monaco, prepared a lavish buffet for the group. Offerings included Asian barbecued ribs, branzino with salsa verde, and chocolate tart with espresso-caramel sauce. These were paired with two of Winemaker Phinney's most popular wines—Mannequin Chardonnay and Mercury Head Cabernet Sauvignon. At evening's end, Vice Echanson Horn received abundant thanks and kudos for her collaboration with Master Distiller Via and Owner Forgus to create such a spectacular event for Cincinnati confrères.
