Laissez les Bon Temps Roulez BY TONY HIRSH, South Central Bailli Provincial CHAÎNE CONFRÈRES MAY be surprised to learn that the Rôtisseurs were already active in the New World when Mardi Gras first appeared in what would become the United States. In 1610, King Louis XIII granted a royal charter to the Rôtisseurs—ninety-three years before the first Mardi Gras in 1703. King Louis XIV sent the Le Moyne brothers to the New World to defend France's claim to the Louisiana Territory. The brothers celebrated the Christian feast of the Epiphany in Mobile, Alabama— which was at that time the capital of colonial French Louisiana. Fast-forward 315 years to February 11, 2018, when the Myrtle Beach Bailliage celebrated Mardi Gras at Hook & Barrel res- taurant, which features fresh, sustainable coastal seafood. Owned and operated by Maître Rôtisseur Heidi Vukov and Chevalier Gary Vukov, Hook & Barrel is the couple's third acclaimed Myrtle Beach-area eatery. With Preservation Hall-style jazz playing in the background, costumed members joined in the festivi- ties. The menu showcased fresh shellfish, local saltwater fish, and Cajun pork tenderloin, perfectly matched with barreled wines from top wineries. On each dining table was a beautiful King Cake centerpiece that one lucky guest per table got to take home. The good times did indeed roll!
