Harvest at the Ranch at Laguna Beach BY SHERYLE ULYATE, Far West Chargée de Presse Provincial VICE ECHANSON DAVID Ashkenaze and Mary Kaye Ashkenaze are fond of dining at the Ranch at Laguna Beach, which has the rare distinction of being a National Geographic Unique Lodge of the World. The Ashkenazes arranged a dinner at the Aliso Canyon resort's Harvest restaurant for the Newport Beach Chapter on June 10. The couple collaborated with Executive Chef Kyle St. John on the menu, and, together, they chose wines from Uruguay, South Africa, and Australia that might be new to attendees. Chef St. John dazzled diners with his edible art. The canapés were delightful, and the subsequent five-course dinner was beautiful to look at and delicious to eat! The wines were a hit, too, generating many comments and questions. As part of his presentation, Vice Echanson Ashkenaze shared a fun fact about Australian Winemaker Damon Eastaugh of Wildberry Estate. In the morning, he surfs waves as high as sixty feet and is ranked among the top five big-wave surfers in the world. Later in the day, he heads inland to tend to his vines and wines. He must be excelling at that as well: his Reserve Chardonnay 2015 received a 97-point rating from Australia's leading wine critic, James Halliday.
