Zin Franklin BY KATHY SHAY, Southwest Chargée de Presse Provincial THE AUSTIN BAILLIAGE'S celebra- tion of World Chaîne Day on April 21 at the beautiful home of Chambellan Provincial Denise Valliant and Vice Echanson Honoraire Allen Valliant had a theme that was decidedly local—Texas barbecue. It wasn't just any barbecue, however, as confrères were treated to Franklin Barbecue Owner/Chef Aaron Franklin's incomparable smoked bris- ket. Chef Franklin is said to be the only pitmaster to garner a James Beard Foundation award. Austin's own Thirsty Goat Amber Beer was a liquid option as were three highly rated zinfandels from California. The zins proved to be the perfect accom- paniments to the smoky beef. As if brisket, sausage, and chicken weren't enough meat, Chambellan Provincial Valliant's jalapeño poppers were wrapped in bacon—a Texan's delight! (On that note, the potato salad also had bacon. Rolaids, anyone?) With the rousing country music of Three Chord Rodeo playing in the background, members posed and toasted World Chaîne Day. Vice Chargée de Médias Sociaux Sue Rondini recorded the festivities for the chapter's contribution to the Social Wall. The evening was filled with fun, food, and good, old-fashioned Chaîne camaraderie. Founding father Ben Franklin may not have actually uttered this quote, but the sentiment is accurate nonetheless: "In wine there is wisdom, in beer there is freedom, in barbecue there is happiness."
