Beautiful Wines from a Beautiful State BY PAUL KOULOGEORGE, Mid-Atlantic Chargé de Presse Provincial THE PHILADELPHIA MONDIALE'S annual California wine din- ner is one of members' favorite events. It is organized by Conseiller Gastronomique Provincial Paul Schulze, who educates, entertains, and graces attendees with an assortment of exceptional wines from the Golden State. At Nectar restaurant on June 3, members sampled extraordinary wines from Sonoma, Paso Robles, and Napa. The sparkling wines from Sonoma combined the elegance of champagne with intense flavors of regional fruit. Tasting two vintages of Aubert Eastside Vineyard chardonnays, attendees were divided in their preference of the 2012, with its white fruit notes, or the 2013, with its crème brûlée notes. Moving on to pinot noir, the group tasted a classic Russian River Valley fruit bomb and a more Burgundian, earthier wine, both from Walter Hansel. The last three courses were devoted to big reds. Booker Wines syrahs exhibited cassis, licorice, vanilla, and spice flavors, bal- anced by terrific tannins and acidity. Cabernet sauvignons from Hidden Ridge, nestled in the Mayacamas Mountains, displayed velvety tannins and had a finish that lasted minutes. What a tour de force! Strong wines should be accompanied by a strong menu, and Partner/Executive Chef Patrick Feury rose to the task, serving flavorful, beautifully plated courses that complemented—and stood up to—the powerful wines.
