Bestowing "Laurels" Upon Washington State Wines BY PAUL KOULOGEORGE, Mid-Atlantic Chargé de Presse Provincial ONE BENEFIT OF Philadelphia Mondiale membership is that several members have extensive cellars, facili- tating the planning of in-depth tastings of wines from various regions. At Laurel restaurant on March 18, 2018, Philadelphia Mondiale members enjoyed a dinner showcasing the wines of Washington State. Owner/Chef Nick Elmi crafted his menu to complement the selections. Washington State is the second largest wine-producing state in the country. The state is much further north than California (the largest wine-producing state), meaning that Washington summers have longer, hotter days and cooler nights, resulting in wines with bright fruit and vibrant acidity. Red varietals account for about two-thirds of the state's production. The top white varietal is riesling. The group sampled wines from well-known Washington winemakers Charles Smith (Sixto, K Vintners, CSW), Christophe Baron (Cayuse), and Robert Betz (Betz Family). The Sixto Frenchman Hills Chardonnay was remarkably refined—full of pear, honey, and spice. The Cayuse God Only Knows—named as such because the grenache-heavy blend is always pro- prietary—was a symphony of black cherries and violets. The Charles Smith Royal City Syrah impressed with its expressions of herbs, game, and olive, while the Betz Père de Famille Cabernet Sauvignon was mellow but rich, having reached a perfect age.
