Element for Success BY ANN SANFORD, Bailli TOLEDO BAILLIAGE MEMBERS dined at Element 112 restaurant on March 18, 2018. Owner/Executive Chef/ Maître Rôtisseur Chris Nixon, a veteran of Craft in New York and Noma in Copenhagen, came home to Ohio to open his own establish- ment in 2012. It wasn't long before he had solidified his reputa- tion as owner/chef of the best restaurant in Toledo. The chef's spe- cialty is "new American food." His talent was evident from the outset; the delectable appetiz- ers offered the perfect balance of sweet and savory flavors. In fact, some attendees fol- lowed servers around in hopes of procuring another taste! For the first course, diners were pre- sented with mysterious Chinese boxes, which, when opened, emitted a sweet-smelling smoke that engaged all of the senses. Nestled in each box were two chickpea panisses . Other culinary highlights included Chef Nixon's famous gnocchi with shrimp and a Brie-Gouda hybrid produced exclusively for Element 112. Those with a sweet tooth were satisfied as well. The primary dessert of raspberry macaron with sorghum buttercream and blackberry cheesecake was followed by a selection of bonbons and mini treats that had diners buzzing about their favorites. All agreed that Toledo is fortunate to have such a sophisticated dining establish- ment run by such a gifted young chef.
