Around-the- Celebration BY BRIAN T. MOTO, Vice Chargé de Presse IF YOU LIVE on an island in the middle of an ocean, there are two ways to experience the rest of the world: you either leave the island or you invite the outside world to join you. On December 13, the Maui Bailliage chose the lat- ter, hosting a black-tie holiday celebration at the Mauka Makai res- taurant in the Westin Nanea Ocean Villas. The seven-course feast was prepared under the joint super- vision of two talented chefs: Mauka Makai Executive Sous- Chef Ikaika Manakū and Executive Chef neighboring Westin Kā'anapali Ocean Resort Villas. The menu featured fresh products sourced from Maui, Molokai, Lanai, and Kauai farms. The din- ner was coordinated by Assistant Director of Food & Beverage Ricky Hamasaki. Pūlehu–An Italian Grill General Manager James Hansen paired the dishes with interesting wines from France, South Africa, Argentina, Lebanon, Italy, California, and Spain. His selections were informed by his many years of experience in the wine industry. The holiday gathering, which began in the warm glow of a golden sunset, ended with a hula performance by Leslie Kimura, daughter of Dame de la Chaîne Kyoko Kimura and Glenn Yamasaki.
