Annual Scholarship and Competition Fund-Raiser BY LESLEY MIQUEL, Vice Chargée de Presse THE LATE-AFTERNOON sun streamed through the windows of Café Brazil on October 23, bathing the room in light and setting the stage for a night of vibrant colors and flavors—not to mention spirited competition! The Denver Mile High Bailliage's annual scholarship and compe- tition fund-raiser opened with colorfully clad confrères perusing the diverse array of silent auction items generously donated by members. While browsing, they sipped Colombian rum and snacked on goat cheese-stuffed peppers and patatas bravas —divine! Seamlessly blending Portuguese, Spanish, Asian, African, and Middle Eastern flavors, Partner/Chef Tony Zarlenga displayed his Nuevo Latino cuisine. Preparations such as delicate nairagi toro and fiery blackened cod were paired with beautiful wines. Edible flowers provided gorgeous finishing touches. While the menu offered plenty of spice, the real heat came when Vice Chancelier-Argentier Elisa Adam led the live auction for the big- gest donation—a night on Catalina Island, including transportation by helicopter! The competition was fierce but friendly, with more than a dozen participants placing bids. In all, the Denver Mile High Chapter raised $1,600 for its competition fund and more than $3,200 for its scholarship fund. By all measures, the evening was a resound- ing success!
