Martini Madness BY JUDITH KELLOGG, Hawaii/Pacific Islands Chambellan Provincial ONE OF HONOLULU'S most exquisite homes sits oceanside on a serene pri- vate peninsula. Kauai/Oahu members who gathered there for a fund-raising event on December 16 felt as if they had been transported to a timeless world of grace and beauty. A picture- perfect sunset gave way to a romantic scene with moonlight sparkling on the water, the backdrop was tropi- cal perfection. Martinis took center stage at the bar, and a lavish spread allowed attendees to nibble and mingle hap- pily the entire night. The Hawaii Liberty Belles performed songs in the boogie-woogie style reminiscent of the high-energy 1940s. Later, revelers gathered around the grand piano to listen to and at times sing along with classic melodies. The nostalgia went beyond the event itself, as this was also a farewell gesture from the hosts, who are mov- ing from the islands. Garrett Saikley and Robert Carpenter have been long- time, generous supporters of culinary education in Hawaii. Hosting this fund-raiser, along with the auction of premium wines from their cellar, raised $5,900 for the culinary arts pro- gram at Kapiolani Community College.
