Competition. The contestants were Iaroslav Golobokov and Feron McLemore of Galveston, Victoria Sonora of Denver, Khanh Dang of Dallas, and Kevin Donovan of Austin. That afternoon's event took place at the fun, funky Russian House. Greeted by a life-sized stuffed bear and a bar with 150 house-flavored vodkas, confrères sipped "Russian champagne" in preparation for the pièce de résistance—a caviar tasting. The maître d' described three red and two black caviars that he grew up eating in Russia. Needless to say, the beluga was caviar par excellence. Capping the weekend was a black-tie gala at the host hotel, the Westin Austin Downtown. Conseiller Culinaire Provincial Leslie Bartosh praised all of the contestants and announced that Khanh Dang was the winner and that Kevin Donovan placed second. Bailli Provincial Salomon presented Art Institute of Austin Culinary Arts Program Chair/ Maître Rôtisseur David Holtzman with a check for $5,000 for hosting the competition. Chancelier National Ira Falk led an inspiring and entertain- ing induction ceremony. The five new gastronomes were Dames de la Chaîne Catherine Armitage, Glenda Gause, and Tanya May and Chevaliers Jerry Gause and Lewis May. Austin Pastry Chef Michaelle Arcilla-Hall was inducted as a maître rôtisseur. The élevés included Chambellan Provincial Allison Ahrens, who is the Denver Mile High bailli, Austin Vice Conseiller Culinaire Steve Mannion, and Lacs et des Bois Chargée de Médias Sociaux Julie Tilton. With the ceremonies concluded, Executive Chef Martin Wilda and his team delivered an exceptional repast. Some diners deemed the meal to be the finest Chaîne dinner they had experienced. The invitation to this Southwest Regional Chapitre promised "Food…Wine…Friends…Austin." What more could one possibly hope for! G Officers, inductees, and élevés. Austin Echanson Hon.
