Vertical Variations: Up and Down the California Coast BY TERRY MATHIS, Vice Echanson CALIFORNIA HAS SOME lovely wines, and on January 21, Lacs et des Bois Mondiale members had the opportunity to taste some of this state's best wines at the home of Vice Echanson Terry Mathis and Dame de la Chaîne Janie Mathis. It was great fun to experience firsthand how the wines develop over time. The first wine comparison was Hartford Court Far Coast Chardonnay 2012 and 2013. While there were no dis- cernable differences between the vintages, attendees gleaned that California chardon- nay is still fresh, with noticeable fruit, when it is five or six years old. The fun ramped up with the comparison between Hartford Court Arrendell Vineyard Pinot Noir 2007 and 2014. The 2007 was mature, with velvety fruit notes, while the 2014 was fresh, young, and fruit forward. A poll of members' preferences showed a nearly fifty-fifty split! The group concluded that there is no "right" answer—people enjoy their wine at different points of its evolution. Lawrence + Leblanc Catering + Events Partner/ Executive Chef Lawrence Fogarty was honored for the delicious meal, and his outstanding team received com- memorative pins. The Mathises received an engraved Mondiale plate in thanks for hosting this delight- ful event.
