Oktoberfest in the Tropics BY CELIAMARIE MOORE, Vice Chargée de Presse FOR ONE MAGICAL evening, the venerable Pacific Club in Honolulu was transformed into a Munich-style beer hall for the Kauai/Oahu Mondiale's Oktoberfest celebration on October 19. In the dining room, Bavarian flags were suspended from the pil- lars, and the tables were laden with bouquets of seasonal flowers, creating a festive setting for the family-style feast prepared by Executive Chef/Vice Conseiller Culinaire Eric Leterc and his talented team. Arriving attendees were immediately drawn in by the rousing music of celebrity musician Pierre Grill, who donned lederhosen and a Tyrolean hat. Bailli John Magauran greeted members with glasses of Pierre Sparr Crémant d'Alsace Brut Reserve N.V. People strolled from group to group, happily exuding a sense of gemütlichkeit . Served on heaping platters, the classic German fare included an array of salads, beer-braised short ribs, roasted salmon in Guinness- butter sauce, and time-honored knackwurst, bratwurst, sauerkraut, and spätzle. All were paired with imported Bavarian beers chosen by Chef Leterc and Southern Wine & Spirits Beer Portfolio Manager Bill Carl. The evening was steeped in nostalgia for those whose ancestral roots were in Deutschland, and it sparked excitement in others, who vowed to visit this amazing region on their next European sojourn.
