Winemaker for a for a Night BY VICTOR S. SLOAN, Vice Chargé de Presse A UNIQUE TWO-PART event was in store for Garden State Mondiale members on October 8; a visit to Vice Echanson-elect Mike Beneduce's eponymous winery was followed by a deli- cious dinner at the Grill at the Pittstown Inn, owned by Gary Walia. While leading attendees through some technical aspects of winemaking, Vice Echanson-elect Beneduce had them taste the products at various stages of the process. Since releasing his first wine in 2011, Vice Echanson-elect Beneduce has received numerous honors, including his winery appearing on Travel + Leisure's list of the top twenty- five wineries in the United States. At the Pittstown Inn, attendees acted as somme- liers, as Echanson Provincial/Bailli George Staikos and Vice Echanson-elect Beneduce held a blind tasting of two wines for each course. Diners were told that of the two wines for each course, one was from the old world and one was from the new. Each table was asked for their consensus (if they could reach one) as to what vari- etal was featured during each course. Of course, it wouldn't be a Mondiale event with- out a bit of gamesmanship, so the Mongeard-Mugneret Vosne-Romanée wasn't paired with an Oregon pinot noir but with Vice Echanson-elect Beneduce's own estate- grown pinot noir from down the road.
