PHILADELPHIA Donelan Wines at Will BYOB BY PAUL KOULOGEORGE, Mid-Atlantic Chargé de Presse Provincial ONE BENEFIT OF Mondiale membership is the oppor- tunity to have in-depth tastings from top wineries led by the vignerons and winery owners. Attendees learn how harvest conditions, winemaker choices, and other factors alter the characteristics of the wines year-on-year. On November 19, at Will BYOB, the Philadelphia Mondiale was treated to an in-depth tasting of Donelan Family Wines, followed by a spectacular dinner pre- pared by Owner/Chef Chris Kearse. Located in Sonoma County, Donelan produces small-quantity wines that range from big and bold to bright and light. Donelan wines consistently receive ratings of 95+ from leading reviewers. Founder Joseph Donelan and his son Tripp Donelan, who is the director of sales, provided an overview of their viticulture and winemaking philosophy, which includes creating wines with more restrained features reminiscent of French winemaking. For example, their flagship Obsidian Vineyard Syrah is designed to evoke Hermitage wines. Attendees tasted five vintages of this magnificent wine. The group favorite was the 2013, which displayed extraordinary black fruit, licorice, and chocolate notes and a gorgeous full body. The tasting had a poignant note, however—Obsidian Vineyard had been destroyed by recent wildfires. Thus, members tasted wines that would not be replicated for many years.
