Fresh Off the Vine The Mondiale continues to be a special part of the Chaîne. In most bailliages, both trade professionals and amateur enthusiasts create and enjoy unique tasting and dining events for Mondiale members. These events are offered at the regional and national levels as well, affording the opportunity to meet fellow Mondiale members and enjoy the Chaîne camaraderie that we all love. In May, the National Mondiale Weekend was held at the Allegretto Vineyard Resort in Paso Robles—one of California's fastest-growing and critically acclaimed wine regions. Mondiale members participated in a weekend of wine tours, seminars, dine-arounds, banquet dinners, and, of course, the Young Sommeliers Competition finals. The winner was Jeremy Shanker of Michael Mina restaurant in San Francisco. He will go on to compete against Chaîne champions from other countries at the international competition in Mexico City from September 21-22. Be sure to check the results on our national website: www.chaineus.org. Another opportunity recently arose for our sommelier champions to hone their skills and compete against the world's best at the inaugural One Belt, One Road Champion Sommelier Challenge and Summit in Ningxia, China. This will be a two-day competition during a week of wine tours and tastings sponsored by China's wine industry. Our 2015 National Young Sommeliers Competition winner, Andrey Ivanov, will be competing, and yours truly has been invited to accompany him. Ask me about Chinese wine the next time you see me! Finally, it is not too early to save the date for the 2019 National Mondiale Weekend in Napa from April 25-28. Our headquarters hotel will be the superb Westin Verasa Napa, ideally situated downtown, within walking distance of many of Napa's famed tasting rooms, gourmet restaurants, and one-of-a- kind boutiques. An exciting array of gastronomic and educational events is planned, the centerpiece of which will be the 2019 Young Sommeliers Competition finals, conducted live at the CIA at Copia. This event is guaranteed to sell out, so watch for registration materials later this year and be sure to act quickly! I'm looking forward to seeing you in Napa!
