BY WILLIAM S. BABASH, Vice Chargé de Presse THE WASHINGTON, D.C. Bailliage celebrated its fiftieth anniver- sary on October 26 with a black-tie induction gala at the Ritz-Carlton Washington, D.C. More than one hundred attendees enjoyed a spec- tacular evening of memories, camaraderie, and great food and wine. Bailli Judith Mazza opened by welcoming several distinguished guests. Members were honored that Bailli Délégué Harold Small and Bailli Provincial John Fannin III had traveled to Washington, D.C. for the event, as had many other Chaîne officers from around the country. On the same day fifty years earlier, Bailli Mazza told attendees, nineteen men were inducted to create the Bailliage of Bethesda/Chevy Chase, Maryland—two D.C. suburbs. Under Bailli David Lawson, the chapter started off with three black-tie events per year. Over time, it expanded, including geographically. It is currently one of the most active chapters in the United States, with more than 130 members, its own wine cellar, and at least ten events per year, ranging from formal dinners to more casual gatherings. Bailli Délégué Small congratulated confrères, noting how rare and special a Chaîne fiftieth anniversary is. He and Bailli Provincial Fannin provided a history of the society as well as insights into its traditions and camaraderie worldwide. Bailli Mazza inducted twenty-six new members, including five industry professionals. Four others were promoted, including Baltimore Bailli Stuart Goldberg to chambellan provincial. As each name was read, appropriate ribbon around the neck of the honoree. Bailli Délégué Small touched the honorees' shoulders with a French sword and bestowed them with their new titles. Members were honored to have Bailli Honoraire Lawson in their PHOTOS BY ARVIN PHOTOGRAPHY, JUDITH MAZZA, AND ALLAN KAM Vice Chargé de Presse Bill Babash.
