The Wichita Bailliage's 50th BY ALAN D. BANTA, Vice Chargé de Presse WHILE TRAVELING IN France, Britt Brown and S.O. Beren learned about the Chaîne and set out to create a chapter in the Wichita area. After consulting with well-established local restaurateurs Gunter Weihe and Josef Auerbach, they held an organizational din- ner on February 1, 1967. Forty-four interested guests attended. The Wichita Bailliage's inaugural induction dinner took place at the Wichita Country Club on May 7, 1967. Chicago Bailli George Rezek presided over the ceremony, and the first official bailliage photo was taken. From that beginning fifty years ago, the Wichita Chapter has thrived. The Chaîne became a pathway for members to explore cuisine and culinary trends. There was a new focus on and appreciation for the culinary arts in Wichita, as local chefs were given the freedom to experiment in designing Chaîne menus. The legacy of the original members, with their vision and creativity, is the vibrant, innovative culinary landscape that exists in Wichita today. The special fellowship experienced at the local level carried over to national and international events attended by Wichita members over the years. For a half-century, the Chaîne has helped shape the culinary trends in Wichita, nurturing many restaurants and chefs along the way—something of which the bailliage is very proud. On December 6, Wichita members returned to the Wichita Country Club—which has been a lead- ing venue for Chaîne events over the decades—for a fiftieth-anniversary celebration. The reception featured a raw bar, champagne, and assorted wines. Lending a nostalgic note to the evening, Tyler Gauldin's jazz quartet played selections from the late 1960s. The bailliage recognized several longtime mem- bers, including five who have been members for more than forty years: Grand Commandeur/Bailli Honoraire Jamie Coulter (inducted in 1972), Grand Commandeur/Bailli Honoraire Nestor Weigand PHOTOS BY PETER ESPINOSA 120 :: C H A I N E U S .
