In the Pink BY MARIE ADDARIO, Vice Chargée de Presse National TO LA JOLLA locals, she is the "Pink Lady," but to the international jet set, she is La Valencia Hotel, a member of the National Trust's Historic Hotels of America and on the global list of Preferred Hotels & Resorts. Set on a bluff, with the Pacific Ocean lapping near her western flank, she is dramatic, intimate, and unforgettable. Built in 1926, La Valencia, with her pink hue typical of Old World Spanish-style architecture, sets a pretty profile against the azure Pacific. The Med Restaurant, or "Great Room," over- looking the sea was the perfect setting for the La Jolla Bailliage's soi- rée on July 11. Co-Owners Ash and Lata Israni attended the dinner. Bailli Dominick Addario and Executive Chef Alex Emery—well-known and respected for his operational prowess and use of local and sustainable products— fashioned a remarkable menu with perfectly paired wines chosen by Wine Director Jennifer Gomez and overseen by Director of Food and Beverage Theo Potgieter. From his personal cellar, Bailli Addario brought Black Slate Porrera Vi de la Vila Priorat 2012 and Pio Cesare Barolo 1998. The dinner was not only delectable but aesthetically beautiful—just like the grand hotel in which it was crafted.
