Great Gatsby Soirée BY JUDITH KELLOGG, Hawaii/Pacific Islands Chargée de Presse Provincial IN F. SCOTT Fitzgerald's famous novel The Great Gatsby , the lovelorn Jay Gatsby throws extravagant parties in hopes of impressing his beloved Daisy. Well, Daisy would certainly have been impressed by the opu- lence of the holiday soirée and casino after- party orchestrated by Bailli Kimi Matar for the Honolulu Bailliage at the Halekulani Hotel on December 5. Gatsby would have used only the finest chefs for his parties, and Executive Chef/Vice Conseiller Gastronomique Vikram Garg fit the bill with his elegant dishes. Vice Echanson Roberto Viernes, MS, chose perfect wines to complement the luxuri- ous meal. Injecting another element of fun and gaiety were those who arrived in Roaring Twenties attire. The Gatsbyesque decadence continued as the party moved to a room fea- turing roulette, craps, and blackjack tables (and plenty of play money to squander). Attendees sipped after- dinner drinks while listening to a piano player and vocal duo perform jazz. Also during the evening, eleven new members were inducted, and two well-deserved awards were bestowed: Chef Garg received a Bronze Star of Excellence and Vice Echanson Viernes received a Bronze Mondiale Medal of Honor.
