Homage to Downton Abbey BY DIANA STROUP, Vice Chargée de Presse IN HOMAGE TO the final season of Downton Abbey , Bailli Joe Marino selected an exquisite re-creation of aristocratic post-Edwardian Britain as the theme for the New Jersey Bailliage's fifty-fourth induction din- ner on January 27. The event was held at the historic Pleasantdale Château in West Orange, New Jersey. Originally the residence of an early American industrialist, the venue is currently owned by the Knowles family. For this event, Vice Conseiller Culinaire Kurt Knowles, Sr. became the Earl of Essex, while his wife, Leslie Knowles, assumed the title of Countess of Montclair. Attire was period perfect with tiara and white tie. Executive Chef Robert Albers researched the menus of the era to craft a six-course dinner that would have appealed to the Yorkshire aristocracy. Three new mem- bers were inducted, and Vice Chargée de Presse Diana Stroup was ele- vated. Dinner was held in the Music Room, which boasts an immense dining table, gorgeous tapestries, and a hand-painted vaulted ceiling. After the meal, in keeping with the tradition of the times, the ladies retired to the drawing room for tea and pastries, while the gentlemen set off to enjoy port and cigars.
