A Tutored Wine Tasting BY THELMA NEGLEY, Vice Chargée de Presse THE NAPLES MONDIALE'S event on December 8 was a wine tasting led by Jean- Noël Fourmeaux, owner of VGS Château Potelle Winery. The venue was the strik- ing Figge Conservatory, whose glass dome reflected images of the festivities against the night sky. A former wine taster for the French government, Mr. Fourmeaux was sent to California as a "spy" after the Judgement of Paris in 1976. The region won him over, and he and his wife, Marketta, sent a tele- gram to his French employers saying, "It looks good. We stay." Mr. Fourmeaux purchased vineyards near Mount Vedeer, where vines spread 47 feet beneath the rocky soil. The cooler con- ditions require a later harvest, allowing the smaller, more concentrated grapes to ripen at a slower pace, adding complexity. Attendees tasted Fourmeaux Zinfandel, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and "The Illegitimate"—a blend of Zinfandel, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. All the while, the charming Mr. Fourmeaux shared his unique perspectives on wine and life. This Mondiale event was truly spe- cial. Confrères sampled wines available exclusively through clubs while savoring the luscious, artistic creations of Crave Culinaire Owner/Chef Brian Roland, one of the best caterers in Naples.
