Greek Wine and Food at Opa! BY KERRI-ANNE RECKORD, Vice Chargée de Presse JAMAICA MONDIALE MEMBERS started the year with a "whoop" when they gathered for a Greek wine and food tasting on January 30 at Opa! Greek Restaurant and Lounge. Greece is home to approximately seventy-seven known indigenous grape varieties and experiencing just a few of them promised to be a treat. The reception featured delight- ful cocktails made from Metaxa 7 Star Brandy and the anise-flavored apéritif ouzo. The menu included such classic Greek delicacies as salmon with skordalia and dolma, lamb in phyllo, and baklava. Owner Alexx Antaeus led diners through each wine complement, introducing them to the aromatic Moschofilero, the bold Xinomavro, and the pungent, pine-resin-flavored Retsina. Much to the surprise and delight of all, Owner Antaeus brought out a bottle of Opus One 1987—the iconic Napa Valley wine first pro- duced as a joint venture between Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild. Although not a Greek offering, attendees could not help being excited about experiencing such a notable wine. As the evening came to an animated close, the group sipped digestives made with house-made vanilla ouzo. Cheers and many thanks to the Opa! team for an evening worth cheering about!
