BY MANFRED RAISER, Chicago Vice Echanson ON FEBRUARY 21, thirty Chicago and Lake Shore Bailliage members gathered to congratulate the win- ner of the Midwest Regional Young Sommeliers Competition— Chicago native Miranda Elliot—at a champagne recep- tion prior to a fabulous Mondiale burgundy tasting and a delightful burgundy dinner at the Union League Club of Chicago. During the tasting, a stellar lineup of eight burgundies (three white and five red) was poured, highlighting dif- ferences in terroir, microclimate, and vintages. The group's expert guide was Johnson Ho, proprietor of the Pantheon Wine Shoppe in Northbrook, Illinois, and an internationally known burgundy expert. His wit, charm, and comprehensive knowledge of the region—including its history, culture, and, of course, wines—turned the first Mondiale event of the Chicago Bailliage's fiftieth anniversary year into an educational and entertaining affair. Executive Chef Michael Garbin, CEC, AAC, prepared a special dinner for confrères. The eve- ning's honored guests included Vice Echanson National des Jeunes Sommeliers David Merrill, Bailli Provincial Renee Wilmeth, and Echanson Provincial Randall Crocker, all of whom were pleased with the competition and subsequent celebratory events.
