Beaujolais Release Night BY BARBARA PROUD, Vice Chargée de Presse THE FIRST STATE Mondiale celebrated Beaujolais Nouveau Day on November 15, 2015 with an evening of Beaujolais wines at Buckley's Tavern in Centreville, Delaware. The venue, which dates back to 1817, is now partially owned by Executive Chef/Chef Rôtisseur Tom Hannum. According to its website, Buckley's is known for its "eclectic clientele"; its parking lot is a place where "Rolls-Royces rub wings with pick-up trucks and the occasional 'six in hand' horse carriage." The planning committee, chaired by Vice Echanson Laurie Jacobs, carried the French theme through all aspects of the event. In choos- ing the wines, General Manager Charles Lewis III—husband of Chef Rôtisseur Michele Mitchell—united present and past by showcasing the new school of Beaujolais and the old Gamay in both new and cru forms. After beginning with a Brut sparkling wine from Domaine de la Voûte des Crozes made with Gamay in the champagne method, the tast- ing moved on to the Nouveau Beaujolais, followed by a Burgundy wine made in the Beaujolais style. The wines were enjoyed with traditional French bistro fare. At eve- ning's end, attendees toasted their fellow confrères in Paris, who were in their thoughts that day, while the French flag hung prominently at the restaurant's entrance.
