Rooftop Tequila Tasting BY DAVID GREENLEE, Vice Chargé de Presse TEQUILA'S BAD-BOY reputation precedes it. Most of us have had a run-in with it at some point when our judgment (and finances) needed improvement. Today, it's no longer, "one tequila, two tequila, three tequila, floor," as the notorious T-shirts read. On January 18, Kauai/Oahu Mondiale members assembled on the lanai of the highly regarded Buho Cocina y Cantina in Honolulu. The first libation was a Desert Rose Margarita, which looked like a typical margarita but tasted like it came from a health-food bar. Each of the five dinner courses was paired with a different tequila. The tasting was guided by expert Sommelier Jeff Smith of Southern Wine and Spirits. The flavors ranged from a defi- nite margarita base to elegant sips more reminiscent of cognac. The final offering, which accompanied dessert, put the famous sweet liqueur Kahlúa on notice: there's a new quaff in town. The tequila tasting attracted snowbirds as well as locals. In attendance were confrères from locales as far- flung as Denver, Chicago, Taiwan, Sweden, and Beverly Hills—all escaping varying degrees of chill to warm their hearts and palates with pleasant company and the most elegant Mexican cuisine in Hawaii.
