Echanson National Charles Bennett orchestrated a superb weekend based at the Hilton Sonoma Wine Country Hotel from April 28-May 1. The beauty of attending a national Mondiale meeting is the privi- leged interaction with creators of the wines enjoyed by so many. Where else can one be mesmerized by the passion of a winemaker describ- ing how he lets the terroir speak to him? Where else can one sit with eighth-generation cognac royalty Maurice Hennessy while enjoying a $3,000 cognac that he has personally poured? Where else will one meet the most prolific cork maker in the world? Or get to know the stars of the weekend—the talented individuals competing in the National Young Sommeliers Competition? All this while champagne provided by the competition's new sponsor, Moët & Chandon, flowed copiously. Attendees were faced with the enviable dilemma of choosing among the fascinating educational offerings, each one, of course, incor- porating tastings of fine wines.
