Visit to Betz BY ROBIN DU BRIN, Pacific Northwest Chargée de Presse Provincial/Seattle Vice Chargée de Presse SEATTLE BAILLIAGE MEMBERS were greeted at the Betz Family Winery in Woodinville, Washington, on March 1, by Co-Owners/Winemakers Steve and Bridgit Griessel. Following the cham- pagne reception, Steve Griessel gave a wonderful introduction to the winery. Founder Bob Betz is among a small num- ber of Masters of Wine in the United States. Before he and his wife, Cathy, founded the winery in 1997, he was head winemaker at Château Ste. Michelle. Even after selling the operation to the Griessels in 2011, Bob has stayed on as the patriarch. Among the numerous markers of the Betz Family Winery's suc- cess, its Cabernet Sauvignon le Parrain 2012 received a rating of 99 points from Robert Parker. The Griessels also have a unique story; they left South Africa to start a new life with more opportunity in the United States. The couple shared their wine- making philosophy with confrères and expressed their desire to operate the best winery in Washington State. The fascinating history of these two families was followed by another treat—a delicious meal executed by Owner/Chef Philip Mihalski and his team from Nell's Restaurant.
