Falling in Love with Autumn BY CLAUDETTE VERONICA FERRON, Vice Chargée de Presse Falling in love is sweeter the second time around. THROUGH THE CULINARY artistry of Executive Chef Anthony Chittum on October 27, 2015, the Washington, D.C. Bailliage discovered that this sentiment can apply to landmark restau- rants as well as to sweethearts. Prior to closing two years ear- lier, the Iron Gate was Washington, D.C.'s oldest, continuously operating restaurant. Now, under the excel- lent leadership of Chef Chittum—a 2015 James Beard Award Semifinalist for Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic— the restaurant has been reborn. The lovely eve- ning began in the cozy courtyard, overhung with grapevines and a century-old wisteria, under a protective awning with fire pits and torches warming the hands and hearts of diners in the cool October air. Retreating to the charm- ing Colonial-style dining room, attendees continued to celebrate the joys of gourmet indulgence as Chef Chittum further showcased his penchant for locally sourced, farm-to-table artisanal ingredients. Throughout the night, Chef Chittum engaged con- frères with his demonstration of innovative culinary skill and talent befitting the next chapter of the Iron Gate— one of the nation's most illustrious restaurants.
